Reset After the Fourth
Long days, cookouts, time with family, fireworks, being outside... it's everything summer should be. But if you're anything like us, by the time it's over you're feeling it.
Maybe you've had a little more sugar than usual. Maybe your workouts took a back seat for a few days. Maybe you've been grabbing convenience foods because you've been on the go.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying the holiday, but there's also something refreshing about getting back into a routine.
It made me think about the idea of "Christmas in July."
Not the sales or decorations, but the feeling that you can have a low-key refresh, and start on new goals and resolutions without waiting until January.
Summer isn't over. In fact, there's still plenty of time to build healthy habits that carry you into fall, and all the way into the winter.
Get Back to Real Food
After a holiday weekend, think about nourishment. Our bodies recover best when we give them nutrient-dense foods instead of trying another cleanse or detox. That means filling the plate with foods our great-grandparents would recognize.
Grass-fed beef.
Pasture-raised eggs.
Raw or grass-fed dairy if you tolerate it.
Bone broth.
Seasonal fruit.
Healthy fats like butter, avocado, and olive oil.
When you build meals around real food, your energy tends to follow.
Just lace up your shoes and go.
One weekend doesn't erase months of consistency. If you've missed a few workouts, don't try to make up for it with punishment.
We enjoy all that comes with training for Spartan races, and one thing we've learned is that consistency beats intensity every time.
You don't have to run your fastest mile. You don't have to lift your heaviest weight. Just get moving again. Momentum comes back much faster than we think.
Don't Forget Your Minerals
If you've spent the weekend in the sun, chances are you've lost more than just water.
Sweating means losing important minerals that support energy, muscle function, recovery, and hydration.
Before reaching for another energy drink, start with the basics.
Filtered water.
A pinch of quality sea salt.
Mineral-rich foods.
Coconut water.
Fresh fruit.
Sometimes the afternoon slump isn't because you need more caffeine, it's because your body needs hydration.
Restock Your Kitchen
Before buying more groceries, clean out the fridge. Use the leftover grilled meat, freeze fruit that's getting soft, and then fill your kitchen with foods that make healthy choices easy.
When your pantry is stocked well, convenience doesn't have to mean processed.
Your Christmas in July Challenge
Instead of waiting until January, make one small commitment this week.
Cook dinner with whole foods every night.
Swap processed desserts for fresh fruit.
Go for three runs.
Lift something heavy.
Take a hike.
Drink more water.
Visit your local farmers market.
You don't need a new year to become a healthier version of yourself. You just need your next meal, next workout, and next choice, to be a great one.
