Continuing our series on combating fatigue
We continue on with the STARTS of the Root Cause Protocol (RCP) in an effort to help you take control of your own health. As hard as it is to believe, the main source of your fatigue could be iron overload, even if your doctor has told you that you need to supplement with iron.
You have plenty of iron in your tissues, yet it might be stuck and oxidizing, potentially causing all kinds of symptoms, including:
Abdominal Pain
Adrenal Function Problems
Neurodegenerative Diseases
Cardiovascular Diseases
Autoimmune Diseases
Blood Sugar Dyregulation
Cancer
Chronic Fatigue
Depression
Hypothyroidism
Infertility
Osteoporosis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Joint Pain
Metabolic syndrome
This is just a partial list from Morley’s book. Our goal with the RCP is to get the iron unstuck and recycled back into circulation through our bone marrow and red blood cells.
How do we accomplish this? By increasing magnesium, bioavailable copper, retinol, and sunshine that will in turn ACTIVATE ceruloplasmin.
As Morley mentions, keep in mind that mainstream medicine has a very “reductionist model of ‘healthcare,’” A protein that has eight copper atoms and 20+ simultaneous enzyme functions does not fit into their worldview.
Also, currently there is no accurate way to measure the activity of ceruloplasmin. You can only measure its level in the blood, which doesn’t tell you if the ferroxidase enzyme portion of the protein is actually working (this is the portion that regulates iron metabolism).
Morley has done his best to come up with a blood panel that will give you as much information as possible to see what your particular problems could be and what to tackle head on. It’s called the Full Monty and you can get it here from Request A Test (who is very strict on privacy), through a blood draw at either Lab Corp or Quest Diagnostics. No doctor needed. We have done it, and it couldn’t be more simple and easy to do, and is definitely worth the $250 - the info you will receive could be invaluable.
Now, on to the STARTS for today:
PHASE 3: Advanced Nutrients
11. START Taking taurine
12. START Taking silica / diatomaceous earth
13. START Taking iodine from food
11. We can make taurine in our bodies, but not well if we are lacking retinol (vitamin A), vitamin B6, and some oxidases - and remember most need copper to work. Taurine is great for our heartbeat, our brain, and our immune system. The best sources are seafoods (clams, mussels, and scallops) but you can supplement with it safely at 500 mg daily at dinner. Some people claim taking up to 1500 mg works best for them. Get it here.
12. Silica is another mineral that is less known in mainstream circles, but very well known in the natural health space. It supports cholesterol and blood pressure, and improves digestive function. The best source of silica is diatomaceous earth (DE), which is “formed from the fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae called diatoms.” DE has also been shown to help your body remove mold, mucus, fungi and toxic heavy metals from the GI tract. You should take DE on an empty stomach separate from any medications or other supplements. Start with 1/8 tsp and work up to 1 tsp a day. Get it here.
13. Iodine, needed for all hormone production, is particularly important for the thyroid gland but it is used by all cells in the body. Iodine is high in scallops, cod and cranberries, but you may need to supplement with a whole food source, such as this one. Do not add the supplement version if your magnesium levels are not optimal.
So now you have it, the complete list of STOPS and STARTS to a better, fatigue-less you.
Next time I will cover the Phase X list, which are non-nutritional but important action steps that you can take on your journey towards sustainable, all-day energy and less chronic disease.
And one of them is something we personally have prioritized for years and really can’t get enough of…..
Sunshine!
