Houseplants that Purify Your Air

It’s easy to overlook the simple act of breathing. As we shared in our recent post on fresh air, the air that surrounds us has an immense impact on our health.

While many of us think about outdoor pollution, the truth is that indoor air quality matters just as much, and houseplants are one of the simplest (and beautiful) ways to improve it.

Decades ago, NASA conducted a study to explore how plants could purify air in space stations. The results showed that certain houseplants can reduce indoor air pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene: chemicals commonly found in household products and furnishings. While you’ll still want good ventilation, plants can provide a natural boost to cleaner air.

More Than Just Fresh Air

Bringing houseplants into your space isn’t just about air purification:

A natural mood booster – Caring for a living thing can reduce stress and help you feel more grounded.

Aesthetic beauty – Plants add warmth, color, and texture, instantly making your home look more alive.

A touch of nature indoors – With so much time spent inside, having greenery around helps us stay connected to nature.

Great Beginner-Friendly Plants

Here are some excellent options to start with:

Spider Plant – Resilient, great for hanging baskets, and a natural air purifier.
Snake Plant – Almost indestructible and perfect for low-light corners.
Philodendron – Gorgeous trailing leaves and low-maintenance care.

We personally keep spider plants, snake plants, and philodendrons in our home, and they’re hardy, forgiving, and bring such a fresh vibe to every room.

A Quick Note for Pet Owners

Some houseplants can be toxic to cats and dogs. Common culprits include philodendrons, peace lilies, and pothos. If you have pets, be mindful of placement (like hanging baskets or shelves out of reach) and always double-check before bringing home a new plant.

Adding plants to your home is an easy, affordable way to care for both your space and your health. Cleaner air, reduced stress, and a more inviting environment, what’s not to love? Start small, tend to your plants with care, and let them help you breathe easier.

Until next time, be well.
