Running Made Simple

It is officially the last weekend of the summer! Before we go digging into more of our favorite fall topics, let’s discuss a topic for any time of the year: Running!

Running is one of the simplest yet most rewarding ways to improve your health, connect with nature, and even find community. Whether you’re lacing up your shoes for the very first time or looking to elevate your current routine, there’s something for everyone in running.

Running isn’t just about fitness, it’s a chance to step outside, unplug, and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Studies show that being outdoors, especially in forests or green spaces, can reduce stress, improve mood, and even boost focus. Running gives you a reason to get outside, soak up sunlight, and enjoy some screen-free time.

Plus, running has a thriving community. Local running clubs, group runs, or even virtual challenges are all ways to meet people who share your passion. Whether it’s a casual jog or training for a race like a Spartan (which we personally love to take part in) connection is built one step at a time.

Getting Started: Beginner Tips

If you’re new to running, the most important thing is to start slow. Some tips:

  • Mix walking and jogging:

Begin with intervals of walking and jogging to build stamina without overtaxing your body.

  • Make it fun:

Explore local parks, trails, or scenic neighborhoods. Running where you enjoy the view makes it easier to stick with it.

  • Invest in proper footwear:

Natural footwear can make a big difference in comfort and injury prevention. We love Altra shoes, but the most important thing is to find a pair that fits your foot and running style. If you’re new to natural footwear, start slow to let your feet adapt.

  • Dress appropriately:

Layering for weather, moisture-wicking fabrics, and good socks all add up to a better experience.

Trail Running:
A Softer, Scenic Option

Trail running is a favorite of mine. Not only does it get you into the woods, providing a dose of forest bathing, but the softer terrain is easier on your knees and feet. It’s also a great way to challenge your balance and strengthen stabilizing muscles, making everyday movement easier.

Fueling Your Run

Nutrition matters, especially for longer or more intense sessions. We use Tailwind Nutrition Endurance Fuel, a gluten-free, vegan carbohydrate and electrolyte drink that keeps me going without feeling weighed down.

We also love UnTapped Packets of Pure Maple Syrup for natural endurance.

Tips for More Experienced Runners

If you’ve been running for a while and want to improve performance:

  • Consider a coach or structured plan:

Working with a coach or using a coach-designed training plan can help you train smarter and avoid burnout.

I follow plans from The Running Public, which is also my favorite running podcast.

  • Vary your runs:

Incorporate intervals, hill runs, or trail sessions to challenge your body in different ways.

  • Listen to your body:

Even experienced runners need rest, recovery, and mobility work to stay healthy and avoid injury.
