Understanding Natural Versus Added Sugars
Sarah here. I want to talk to you about sugar.
I have started doing something every morning that for decades I would have sworn was the worst idea ever and that no good would ever come from it.
Drinking orange juice. ๐
I know, pretty common on the American breakfast table, but NOT so much in our house. We have always been of the mindset that whole fruits are great, but juice was a treat. OJ was reserved for traveling, or when whole foods were scarce, or maybe when a cold bug was going around.
Why? Because of the carbs. The fructose. The sugar that is just waiting to make us fat.
Iโm going to have to admit something that is very difficult for me:
Sugar might not be the demon that I have thought for many years it was.
Processed sugars (the ones on our NOT FOOD list) are still bad.
But real sugar, the ones found in fruit, fruit juices, raw honey, maple syrup, and even occasionally cane sugar, are turning out to be a lot more critical to health than I ever thought possible.
You must understand, I have preached for years that โfat for fuelโ is best for metabolism, and that carbs are just used in smaller amounts to fuel the brain and hormones and to help with electrolyte balance. My daily consumption of carbs has been limited - a handful of berries here, some dark chocolate there. For years Doug has eaten fruit throughout the day and backloaded carbs at night - but that is just because he is a high-performing athlete that demands more fuel.
Now, I may have to do a complete 180ยฐ in my way of thinking.
Our normal breakfast for many, many years?
A cup of coffee with heavy cream.
Possibly a snack at noon.
My breakfast this past month?
4-5 oz of organic orange juice within 30 minutes of waking.
Then a few minutes later, a pastured egg cooked in raw butter and about 2 oz of grass-fed beef of some kind on the side.
A raw carrot.
Some more fruit juice. Thenโฆ
A cup of decaf coffee with heavy cream AND a big tablespoon of maple syrup stirred into it.
What is happening to me! ๐ฎ
Well friends, we decided it was time for a complete re-evaluation of all the health positions we currently have, to review the current research out there, and re-think and re-tool based on what is best for us personally at this stage of our lives. And this is the result.
Sugar is not the devil! ๐
Shocking, I know. But we will continue our research and try our best to summarize and simplify it for you to explain why.
